A method for operating an internal combustion engine having at least one combustion chamber and means for forming a combustible air/fuel mixture within the combustion chamber is described, comprising detecting the luminosity within the combustion chamber, detecting the pressure within the combustion chamber, calculating the surface area of the combustion chamber and determining the burned gas temperature based on the detected luminosity, the detected pressure and the calculated surface area of the combustion chamber.
