This Business Guide will assist property owners to understand what an energy performance contract is and how to enter into one. Energy performance contracts are defined and compared to the conventional fixed fee approach to achieving energy efficiency. The various forms of energy performance contracts (installment purchase, lease, shared savings, and energy services) are described with advantages and disadvantages of each pointed out. The reader is then taken through a step-by-step discussion of how to solicit and evaluate proposals and how to negotiate and implement an energy performance contract.
