A bill, H.R.4155, has been introduced in the House of Representatives of the United States on March 1, 1990. The purpose of this bill is to prohibit the siting of low-level radioactive waste disposal facilities near the habitats of endangered or threatened species or wetlands. Pursuant to this Act, no low-level radioactive waste disposal facility may be sited within 25 miles of the critical habitat or within 10 miles of an area determined by the Secretary of the Interior to be a wetland. In addition, no low-level radioactive waste disposal facility may be sited more than 50 miles from an interstate highway system. This Act does not apply to such facilities in operation on the date of the enactment of this Act located in Barnwell, South Carolina, in Richland, Washington, or in Beatty, Nevada.
