Cumulative distribution functions associated with particle-coarsening processes

Cumulative probability distributions have been derived for the diffusion-controlled coarsening of spherical precipitates, grain-boundary precipitates, and fibers in unidirectionally solidified eutectic alloys. The effect of the volume fraction of particles, phi, is included in the derivations. In all cases the cumulative distribution functions are expressed analytically for the limiting cases phi = 0 and phi = 1. It is shown that the cumulative distributions for interface-reaction-controlled and diffusion-controlled coarsening of spherical precipitates when phi = 1 are identical. Some of the advantages and implications of the calculations are discussed.
