At this point there are four identified spectral backscattered peaks for 50 MHz radar observations of aurorae. Two of the types are less common, type 3 and 4, and the authors present data on type 4 echos extracted from ten years of high resolution radar observations. This data is presented to lend support to a previous work based upon few events in which it was proposed that the most prominant property of the type 4 echos was their Doppler velocity of approximately 1000 m/s, roughly twice the ion acoustic speed. The data set the authors have assembled includes several long type 4 events, and an analysis of the Doppler velocities extracted from this data set ranges from 800 to 1200 m/s, with a peaking near 1000 m/s, roughly twice the ion acoustic speed. The authors present this to support the earlier assertion, and to emphasize the necessity for this point to be addressed by theoretical work aimed at explaining these radar spectra.
