Fracture surface micro-roughness

Journal Article · · Scr. Metall.; (United States)

The small-scale roughness of a fracture surface (a scale typically of a few micrometers) has been of interest for some time. That interest has received an impetus in recent years because it relates to mechanisms of fatigue crack propagation mechanisms determining the fracture toughness and mechanisms of creep fracture. In this note is concerned with the roughness of fracture surfaces produced by microvoid coalescence (or ductile-dimple) fracture. The micro-roughness of a surface refers to the depth, shape, and aspect ratio of the dimples on the surface which in turn are determined by the mechanism of fracture and by the microstructure. A convenient measure is the aspect ratio of the dimple.
