Role of [ital g][sub 2] in relating the Schwinger and Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rules

We show that the strong [ital Q][sup 2] dependence of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule is naturally described by using the Schwinger sum rules and the contribution of the [ital g][sub 2] structure function. The deep inelastic proton longitudinal asymmetry is expected to change sign around [ital Q][sup 2]=0.2 GeV[sup 2]; this important result should be checked experimentally.
