Multiple isotope tracing of methanation over nickel catalyst by a transient method and computer modeling indicated that hydrogenolysis of a hydrogenated chemisorbed C/sub 1/ species is involved in the rate-determining step of carbon monoxide methanation over commercial nickel supported on kieselguhr, and that carbon dioxide formed directly, rather than through the water gas shift reaction.
