Fracture toughness of materials. Progress report, October 1984-October 1985

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6460749
The fracture toughness of partially stabilized zirconia has been measured, for specimens that are extremely metastable, to be approx.30MPa..sqrt pi... This is the largest fracture toughness of any known ceramic. The toughness is measured using a non-linear deformation analysis. Crack tip shielding in steels has been applied to warm pre-stressed specimens. The liquid N/sub 2/ toughness is elevated by about a factor of two. Thermodynamic cycles applied to partially stabilized zirconia have measured linear expansion coefficients at selected unaxial stress states. The hysteretic volume-temperature-stress surface has been determined, including two phase transformations.
