Chevron's options for transporting offshore crude

Journal Article · · Pacif. Oil World; (United States)
OSTI ID:6460027
Chevron and other companies are studying ways to transport and refine offshore crude oil. At the Point Arguello field, Chevron has discovered recoverable reserves which may total between 300 million and 500 million bbl. New reserves on offshore discoveries northwest of Santa Barbara by other companies are estimated at a billion barrels or more. Chevron, Texaco, ARCO, Union Oil Co., and Phillips Petroleum Co. are studying alternatives in processing their offshore crude oil. The companies first choice would be to build a terminal at Gaviota due west of Santa Barbara. The Gaviota facility would include a gas processing plant and a preliminary oil treatment plant to remove light hydrocarbons, water, and hydrogen sulfide before preheating the crude for trans-shipment by pipeline. Transport options after the crude has been tested are discussed.
