Slow-recoil Ne/sup i//sup +/ ions produced by 1. 05 MeV/amu Ne/sup q//sup +/- (q = 2,6,8--10) and Ar/sup q//sup +/- (q = 4,10,12,14) ion impact: Evidence of inner-shell electron transfer in highly charged recoil-ion

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)

The partial cross sections for production of slow-recoil Ne/sup i//sup +/ ions in 1.05 MeV/amu Ne/sup q//sup +/ (q = 2,6,8--10) and Ar/sup q//sup +/ (q = 4, 10, 12, 14) ion impact have been determined. The ratios of the cross sections sigma/sub i/ of recoil Ne/sup i//sup +/ in Ne/sup 10+/ ion impact to those in Ar/sup 10+/ ion impact are found to increase rapidly for i>7, whereas those for iless than or equal to7 are unity, indicating that the production recoil ions are dependent on only the projectile charge and that the main contribution comes from direct ionization processes. This suggests that a significant part of the high-charge-state recoil Ne/sup i//sup +/ ions (i>7) in Ne/sup 10+/-ion impact is produced mainly by transfer processes of K-shell electrons between the projectiles and the target atoms.
