Non-linear plasma oscillations

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6459206
A perturbation expansion is used to calculate the amplitude and phase shift of plasma oscillations described by the collisionless Vlasov equation. It is shown that energy can be conserved by the solution only if interference between the eigenvalue and Landau continuum is taken into account. It is also shown that non-linear effects damp the steady-state oscillations of a linearly stable plasma, so only linearly unstable plasmas can support oscillations.
