Statement concerning the Wilderness Protection Acts of 1982

Conference · · Min. Year Book; (United States)
OSTI ID:6458213
The Colorado Mining Association (CMA) argues that a policy of preventing exploration in wilderness areas overlooks the 10- to 15-year lead time needed to bring a discovered ore deposit into production. The mining industry depends on the geological availability of deposits and on access to lands to discover the deposits. CMA contends that this causes little environmental damage because deposits are found at only a fraction of explored sites. CMA opposes H.R. 5282 for this reason, and suports the extension of the 1983 deadline of section 4(d)(3) of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Further, CMA wants the public to understand that the mineral industry does not have the means to supply immediate substitutes if there is a disruption or shortage of imported strategic materisls.
