Molecular hydrogen and the 2 micron spectrum of NGC 7027

Journal Article · · Astrophys. J.; (United States)
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1086/158758· OSTI ID:6457692
The spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 is presented from 1.6--2.5 ..mu..m with a resolution of 1.2 cm/sup -1/. The presence of molecular hyrodgen emission in the upsilon = 1--0 S(1), and Q(3) lines is confirmed, and the detection of the H/sub 2/ lines upsilon = 1--0 Q(2), Q(4), S(0), and S(2) is reported. The H/sub 2/ line strengths, with upper limits for the upsilon = 2--1 band, suggest a model in which the emitting gas is confined to clumps heated by a shock front accompanying an expanding H II region.
