The stability of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} superconductors towards reactions with CO{sub 2} in CO{sub 2}/O{sub 2} gas mixtures has been studied during annealing at temperatures ranging from 600 {degree}C to 950 {degree}C. The results show that there are three different types of the reactions. The reaction products of these reactions all include BaCO{sub 3} and CuO, while the third product is dependent on the annealing temperature. At 600 {degree}C, YBa-carbonates were formed while Y{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 5} and Y{sub 2}BaCuO{sub 5} were formed at 815 {degree}C and 950 {degree}C, respectively. Transmission Electron Microscopy images show that the reactions started at grain boundaries with the formation of island-type precipitates.
