Title: Characterization of cobalt-nickel mineralization associated with the lead-zinc-copper deposits of southeast Missouri

Three distinct generations of cobalt-nickel mineralization that are closely associated with the lead-zinc-copper deposits of southeast Missouri have been studied by reflected light microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. The earliest generation of cobalt-nickel mineralization occurs in pod-shaped deposits that typically occur stratigraphically below the lead-zinc ores in the Viburnum Trend. These ores contain nickelean carrollite, fletcherite, and framboidal pyrite that are replaced by chalcopyrite and bornite. Chalcopyrite and bornite occur in a unique basketweave texture that results from exsolution and in lamellar replacement textures that are somewhat similar to the exsolution textures. Subsequently deposited cobalt-nickel and copper minerals include gersdorffite, tennantite, vaesite, bravoite, cobaltian pyrite, covellite, digenite, and chalcocite. The second generation of cobalt-nickel mineralization involved multiple periods of siegenite and bravoite deposition. These minerals occur throughout the district, closely associated with chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and marcasite, and represents the largest generation of cobalt and nickel deposition. The third generation involved millerite, polydymite, vaesite, and siegenite, the deposition of which occurred after that of octahedral galena but prior to cubic galena. The results of the study indicate that cobalt and nickel are intimately associated with lead-zinc mineralization and that the genesis of the two are closely related.
