Periodic and quasiperiodic SU(N) instantons

Periodic and quasiperiodic, spherically symmetric, self-dual SU(N) gauge fields are constructed. They contain static, self-dual SU(N) monopoles and also a class of SU(N) instantons as two different limits. They are topologically characterized by monopolelike configurations on an asymptotic S/sup 2/ in R/sup 3/ and also by the action over one period (for the periodic case) or the normalized action over unit time (for the quasiperiodic case). The periodic solutions can be associated with gauge fields at finite temperatures. The possible significance of quasiperiodic fields, introduced in a previous paper for SU(2), is discussed in the context of SU(N). The particularly interesting case of SU(3) is studied in more detail.
