Measurement of the average and longitudinal recoil polarizations in the reaction /sup 12/C(. mu. /sup -/,. nu. )/sup 12/B(g. s. ): Magnitude of the induced pseudoscalar coupling

The polarizations, P/sub av/equivalent/J and P/sub L/equivalent/J, of the /sup 12/B in the reaction /sup 12/C( ..mu../sup -/,..nu..)/sup 12/B(g.s.) have been measured simultaneously, using the method of selective recoil implantation. Their ratio R/sup prime/ is largely immune to the systematics that affect absolute measurements of P/sub av/ and P/sub L/, more dependent on the dynamics than either, and almost insensitive to corrections for captures to /sup 12/B( states. Our result (normalized to unit P/sub ..mu../), R(g.s.) = -0.506(41), yields g/sub P//g/sub A/ = 9.0(1.7) (impulse approximation) and F/sub P//F/sub A/(q/sup 2//sub m/) = -1.03(14) (elementary particle treatment), to be compared to partially conserved axial-vector current predictions of 7 and -0.99, respectively, which are thus quantitatively verified.
