Determination of the rate constants for relaxation of vibrationally excited diatomic homonuclear molecules (H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and N/sub 2/) in the case of collisions with H/sub 2/O, D/sub 2/O, and CO/sub 2/

A thermometric method for the recording of vibrationally excited molecules and a thermal method for their preparation were used to determine the coefficients of the rates of vibrational relaxation of H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and N/sub 2/ in the case of collisions with H/sub 2/O, D/sub 2/O, and CO/sub 2/. The relaxation kinetics were analyzed thoroughly. It is shown that the rate constants for the heterogeneous deactivation of vibrationally excited N/sub 2/ and D/sub 2/ molecules on a quartz surface depend substantially on the state of the surface.
