Bed expansion in a fluidized bed of large particles

Journal Article · · J. Powders Bulk Solids Technol.; (United States)

Investigating the effect of superficial gas velocity, gas density, particle size, and bed height on the expansion of a fluidized bed of particles classified as Geldart's group D, University of Lagos engineers proposed an expression for predicting bed expansion based on a modified two-phase fluidization model. Tests implied that bed expansion (1) depends primarily on the excess gas velocity in a fluidized bed of large particles, (2) is essentially independent of particle size, the physical properties of the fluidizing gas, and bed diameter, and (3) decreases with increasing bed height at equal excess gas velocity.
