These methods cover three optional gravimetric procedures for determining sulfur in coal or coke ash prepared according to Method D 2795 or D 3174. The sulfur content is reported as SO/sub 3/. Method A: modified British method, a sample of prepared coal ash is digested in boiling dilute hydrochloric acid solution to which bromine water is added to ensure that all sulfur is oxidized to the sulfate form. After neutralization and precipitation of iron with ammonium hydroxide, the mixture is filtered and sulfate in the filtrate is determined gravimetrically as barium sulfate. Method B: Eschka mixture, a sample of prepared coal or coke ash and Eschka mixture is ignited together in air. The sulfates are dissolved in hot water and separated from undissolved ash residue and magnesium oxide by filtration. Sulfate in the filtrate is determined gravimetrically as barium sulfate. Method C: sodium carbonate fusion method, a sample of prepared coal or coke ash is mixed with sodium carbonate and potassium nitrate and fused in a platinum crucible. The mixture is cooled, digested in hot water, and filtered. Sulfate in the filtrate is determined gravimetrically as barium sulfate.
