Chemical radiation effects from gamma radiation on the chemical and physicochemical properties of intercalation compounds is the subject of this report. This detailed study of molecular intercalation compounds by Mossbauer effect spectroscopy presents a wealth of information about such systems. The ferrocene and related intercalates in FeOCl host lattice provide the opportunity to examine the lattice dynamical behavior of the guest and the host species, independently, and thus probe the behavior of anisotropic solids at two very different points in the lattice. Such studies, combined with variable (low) temperature Fourier transform infrared studies and susceptability measurements, add very significantly to the knowledge of these types of materials. This report studies the Mossbauer effect for NbS/sub 2/ and TaS/sub 2/ intercalates and anhydrons FeCl/sub 3/, FeCl/sub 2/, and FeCl/sub 3/ graphite intercalation compounds.
