This paper presents pilot plant results obtained in the n-butane deasphalting and hydrotreatment (HDT) of a Tia Juana Pesado visbroken residuum of ca. 600 ppM Ni+V. Two process options were considered in the HDT unit: direct processing of a 64 ppM Ni+V deasphalted oil (DAO-60), to blend back the product with the heavy distillates (VGO) and HDT of a 25 ppM Ni+V feed (DAO-25), made up by blending the DAO-60 with the corresponding VGO. The final product obtained could be used as a fuel oil blending component and/or a feed to a catalytic cracking unit (FCC). High metals residua can be upgraded into valuable products by solvent deasphalting, followed by hydrotreatment (HDT) of the deasphalted oils (DAO). Two process options were studied in the HDT unit: direct HDT of the DAO and HDT of a blend made up by the DAO and the corresponding VGO. The results presented in this paper show that the HDT of the diluted feed looks more attractive: less severe processing conditions are required and the used catalyst shows a smaller reduction in pore volume and surface area, and hence, a longer catalyst life. The hydrotreated product from the diluted feed could go to a FCC unit to maximize gasoline production.
