Effect upon cattle of Arizona waters of high fluoride content

Journal Article · · Am. J. Vet. Res.; (United States)

In order to verify the results reported in a literature review, a study of the effects of fluorine compounds has been made of cattle. A clinical examination of the cattle indicated that over a five-year period, the cattle which ingested an average F in take of 1.0 mg per kilogram of body weight per day had a slight mottling and wearing of the incisor teeth. This is in agreement with the conclusions drawn from the literature. As a result of urine and bone analyses, it is concluded that the fluorine content of urine must be well above 10 ppm to indicate current consumption of fluorine in damaging amounts. It is also concluded that the fluorine content of the metacarpus must be above 4,000 ppm to indicate an accumulated amount that would have any effect other than some slight mottling or wear of the incisor teeth.
