Two-dimensional analysis of AC loss in superconductors carrying transport current

Previous treatments of hysteresis loss in cylindrical type II superconductors have been based primarily on slab models which, prior to the work reported here, have not been extended to include calculation methods for the transport current effect. In this report, two extensions of this loss model are presented. The first is a mathematical technique for the computation of the two-dimensional current distribution in a superconducting filament under exposure to a time-variant transverse magnetic field. The technique is based on a method previously used by Beth and Morgan and the solution utilizes the Cauchy integral formula. The second extension includes the transport current in the two-dimensional solution. The current distribution is used to compute the full penetration field as a function of the transport current as well as to compute cyclic hysteresis loss for the entire range of field penetration. The technique of using complex variables with an interative solution is shown to be adaptable to filaments of any regular geometric shape.
