Symmetries and differential equations. III. The inverse problem

The nature of the inverse problem in relation to the symmetries of dynamical systems is clarified. Following techniques introduced in previous papers, the necessary and sufficient conditions in order that a Newtonian system of differential equations admit a given set of symmetry vectors, acting on the space-time of each of the points, are obtained. Some general consequences of these equations are developed. Several examples are worked out in order to make clear the nature of the problems to be faced in relation with the inverse problems, its difficulties and open points.
