Ice ponds

Most applications of ice ponds for cooling or water purification are still in the R and D phase. The only systems that could be built commercially now are winter only ice ponds designed to save energy at appropriate sites for serving substantial cold weather air conditioning or process cooling loads. These applications require considerably less capital investment per annual unit of energy cost savings than annual cycle ice ponds, simply because they do not require the large ice storage volumes or insulating covers. Although further R and D could improve the performance of ice ponds designed for use only during the colder 3 to 5 months of the year, numerous situations have been found where present knowledge and experience would allow construction of such systems for capital costs that would be repaid by energy savings in 1 to 3 years. Three sections briefly set forth some of the key findings, so far, related to ice pond technology. 6 references, 1 figure, 2 tables.
