The Tennessee Valley Authority has begun a program to promote the use of breadbox water heaters. A complementary program of analytical studies and laboratory testing was undertaken to support development of a prototype design proposed for limited field installation and monitoring in 1980 and 1981. A lumped-node R-C network model consisting of 9 nodes and 13 conductors was solved for transient conditions using finite-difference techniques. The model was validated against summer test data by predicting tank water temperatures within 20/sup 0/C (3,6/sup 0/F) for a three-day test period. The model was then used to study cold weather operation. Initial results show that winter operation of the breadbox water heater may not be profitable.
