Natural gas offers flexible emissions-control alternatives

Journal Article · · Electr. World; (United States)

When used to supplement another fossil fuel in a utility boiler, natural gas can reduce emissions of both SO2 and NO/sub x/. Techniques range from simply dedicating one boiler to gas in order to spell another burning coal when regulations dictate to firing coal and gas simultaneously in the same unit but in different burners. These reduce SO2 by reducing the coal burned, as well as NO/sub x/. The paper considers the use of natural gas under the following headings: select gas use; co-firing eases maintenance; reburn for NO/sub x/ control; and sorbent injection.
