Long pulse DCM dye laser
A long-pulse, high-power, flashlamp-pumped dye laser based on the dye DCM (4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-p-dimethylaminostyryl-4H-pyran) has been developed for applications in plasma diagnostics. The laser uses a modified Korad K1 ruby laser head, and a flashlamp circuit capable of prepulse and simmer enhancement. The bubbling of oxygen or nitrogen gas in the dye solution has been found to increase both pulse power and duration. Experiments performed with a dye tube of 7 mm inside diameter, which exhibits spatially nonuniform lsing, have shown typical peak powers on the order of 400 V with a total pulse duration of 100 microsec and a peak wavelength of 644 nm. Attempts to injection lock a laser with a dye tube of 2 mm inside diameter using up to 75 mV of CW power have resulted in several microseconds locked operation. The short duration of the locked pulse is attributed to the fast heating of the dye by the flashlamp, resulting in wavelength shift and delocking of the output.
