Various characteristics of the sun are reviewed, emphasizing solar variability and attempts to elucidate the connection between the sun and terrestrial climate. Attention is given to the sun's energy generation mechanism, the solar neutrino problem, solar oscillations, and sunspot observations. Some terrestrial consequences of solar variability are considered.
