Title: The question of the structure of the vitrinites of coals of different ages (according to infrared spectrometry)

Journal Article · · Solid Fuel Chem. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6440406

A comparison of the absorption band intensities for vitrinites of identical coalification showed the chief difference to be in the number of valency variations in the aliphatic groups CH and CH/sub 2/ (2930 and 2860 cm-/sup 1/ bands), and similar valency variations in the carbonyl groups (band close to 1700 cm-/sup 1/. Increased absorption was found in the case of vitrinites of Mesozoic and Cainozoic coals due to the aliphatic groups CH and CH/sub 2/ as compared with vitrinites of Palaeozoic coals. Features established earlier for Palaeozoic vitrinite were confirmed for those of Meso-cainozoic coals. (13 refs.)
