Mechanical reliability of ceramics for microwave window applications

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6440267
Materials presently being evaluated for use in the output window of gyrotron tubes include structural ceramics made of alumina (..cap alpha..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) and beryllia (BeO). Other candidate ceramics are also being considered. Several properties of the window materials will determine their ability to operate successfully under the anticipated conditions. The strength of alumina, beryllia, and other ceramic materials is described in terms of the statistical nature of their fracture, including the use of Weibull statistics to determine the probability of fracture for a material as a function of the applied stress.
