Oil seals for centrifugal compressors

Oil seals used in modern compressors are highly engineered components that can affect the mechanical integrity and performance of the whole machine. Yet, in specifying compressor seals, one should be careful not to overdesign. Plain labyrinth types are often all that is needed, though more sophisticated seals are often indicated with high pressures, toxic or explosive gases: non-rotating stacked dry carbon rings--rotating balanced bushings--face or mechanical seals, to name a few. This article discusses some of the variables involved in selecting such seals.
