The problem of the distibution in the ''shadow'' of a poloidal limiter of a tokamak of the impurity which arrives from the central plasma column is analyzed by the hydrodynamic approach. The length scale of the decrease in the impurity density is found as a function of the plasma parameters, the impurity species, and the charge state of the impurity for the turbulent and convective mechanisms for plasma transport. The radial impurity distribution is found to be substantially flatter than might be expected on the basis of classical ideas. The reason is that effective mechanisms such as turbulent transport and plasma convection operate to remove impurities toward the chamber wall.
