A method was developed for synthetic lubricating oil production which involves the oligomerization of C/sub 8/-C/sub 12/ ..cap alpha..-olefins by high-temperature polymerization of ethylene in the presence of toluene and an aluminum chloride catalyst. The oils are mixtures of olefin oligomers with dialkylbenzenes and trialkylbenzenes that are formed through toluene alkylation by the olefins and by olefin oligomerization products. The involvement of toluene reduces the degree of unsaturation, eliminates the need for hydrogenation, and improves the thermooxidative stability of the oil. Optimal process parameters were established in a pilot unit. Properties were evaluated by oxidation, thermogravimetry, and friction.
