Thermodynamics of the association reactions OH sup minus + H sub 2 O = HOHOH sup minus and CH sub 3 O sup minus + CH sub 3 OH = CH sub 3 OHOCH sub 3 sup minus in the gas phase

The temperature dependence of the equilibrium constants for the gas-phase reactions HO{sup {minus}} + HOH = HOHOH{sup {minus}} (1) and CH{sub 3}O{sup {minus}} + HOCH{sub 3} = CH{sub 3}OHOCH{sub 3}{sup {minus}} (2) was measured with a pulsed electron high-pressure mass spectrometer. The enthalpy {Delta}H{degree} and entropy {Delta}S{degree} changes were obtained from van't Hoff plots of the equilibrium constants. The enthalpy changes were found in good agreement with values reported by Moet-Ner and Sieck ({minus}{Delta}H{sub 1}{degree} (kcal/mol):27.6, present work; 26.8, Moet-Ner. {minus}{Delta}H{sub 2}{degree} (kcal/mol): 29.3, present work; 29.3, Moet-Ner). These values are also in good agreement with recent theoretical results.
