The method of infrared microwave sideband laser spectroscopy developed by others for application in the 9-11 ..mu..m region with a CO/sub 2/ laser has been extended to application in the 5-6 ..mu..m region with a CO laser. The experimental details, performance of the system, and typical spectra are described. Frequency measurements of spectra in the 01/sup 1/1 left arrow 00/sup 0/00 band of /sup 14/N/sub 2//sup 16/O and the 20/sup 0/0 left arrow 00/sup 0/0 band of /sup 16/O/sup 12/C/sup 32/S are compared to the results of previous precise measurements by heterodyne techniques to show that the accuracy is limited mainly by the resettability of the CO laser frequency.
