Downhole tool with gas energized compressible liquid spring

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6437780

This patent describes an annulus pressure responsive gas energized compressible liquid spring downhole tool apparatus, comprising: a housing; a power piston slidably disposed in the housing; first and second pressure conducting passage means for communicating a well annulus exterior of the housing with first and second sides, respectively, of the power piston; and retarding means, disposed in the second pressure conducting passage means, for delaying communication of a sufficient portion of a relatively rapid change in well annulus pressure to the second side of the power piston for a sufficient time to allow a pressure differential across the power piston to move the power piston between a first position and a second position relative to the housing. A method of operating a downhole tool is described. The method comprises, providing the tool having: a housing; a power piston slidably disposed in the housing; first and second pressure conducting passage means for communicating a well annulus exterior of the housing with first and second sides, respectively, of the power piston; retarding means, disposed in the second pressure conducting passage means.
