Kern River: upward and onward

Kern River Field, Calif. is presently in its 69th yr, and production has hit an all time high--approximately 65,000 bpd, up more than 4,000 bpd since the first of the year. Drilling activity at Kern River leads the state by a considerable margin. Paradoxically, Kern River's extremes--the abandonment of more oil wells and the drilling of more new wells than any other field in California--are tied to the same reason: steam. Kern River is oildom's steam capital. At least 129 generators are at work in the field, making it the unchallenged leader not only in California but also throughout the U.S., and probably in the entire world. Getty Oil Co. is the leader of the operators. The firm operates 85 of the 129 generators working in the field, or almost twice as many generators as all the others combined. Of Getty Oil Co.'s 2,100 wells at Kern River, some 1,800 are on steam. Generator installations have been planned so that each generator will serve approximately 25 wells. Getty Oil Co. production is approximately 40,000 bpd, of the total 65,000 bpd.
