Influence of welding quality on the corrosion resistance of titanium-weld joints

Experience in the operation of chlorine industry shops shows that early failure of titanium apparatus and piping is caused primarily by corrosion failure of weld joint zones. In welding of Ti, the parts to be welded are not always carefully cleaned and washed, which is especially important in welding equipment which has already been subjected to the action of aggressive media. In a number of cases, reliable two-sided protection of the weld joints with argon is also not provided, which is the reason for significant oxidation of the metal at the joint and at the zone near the joint. As the result of insufficient heating of the edges being welded, incompletely fused portions sometimes remain in the joints. The authors make comparative corrosion tests of samples of weld joints of VT1-0 titanium in accordance with Industry Standard 26-01-17-76 and also of samples in the welding of which protection of the parts being welded with argon was not provided.
