Apparatus for detecting drill bit wear

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6436731
This patent describes a rotary cone drill bit, comprising: a main bit body, the main bit body defining a central chamber; at least one port in eth main bit body establishing a fluid pathway between the central chamber and the exterior of the main bit body; at least one spindle secured to the main bit body; a rotatable cone on the spindle; a tensioned linkage extending through the spindle and the main bit body, the tensioned linkage having first and second ends; a tensioned linkage termination element secured to the tensioned linkage first end, the termination element being supported by the spindle; means for twisting the termination element in response to the cone rotating with a predetermined degree of eccentricity, the termination element and tensioned linkage being adapted to part from one another in response to twisting of the termination element; and means for altering the fluid flow resistance of the at least one port in response to a decrease in the tension of the tensioned linkage.
