An approximate expression for the efficiency of collection of a single sphere taking into account diffusion as well as direct interception is derived theoretically using the Tomotika-Aoi equation for the flow field around an isolated sphere in the viscious regime. The coefficients in that equation are modified on the basis of experiments to obtain an expression for the efficiency of collection in filtration of a gas in a granular bed as a function of the Peclet number and the direct-interception parameter N /SUB R/ . Another empirical expression is also proposed which takes the Reynolds number as well as N /SUB R/ into account. Both expressions satisfactorily describe experimental data for filtration velocities of 0.2-20 cm/s, aerosol particle diameters of 0.31-2 ..mu..m, and packedgranule diameters of 88-4300 ..mu..m, and also agree fairly well with previously reported data in the diffusive range.
