Compression of mode-locked pulses using nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometers

Two optical pulse-compression schemes based on the excitation of nonlinear interferometers with trains of short pulses are proposed: a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer swept by an off-axis pulse train with a repetition rate adjusted to the interferometer length and a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer whose transmissivity is modulated by an incident pulse train with a repetition rate matched to the interferometer length. Calculations have been made predicting compression factors reaching 10/sup +1/ to 10/sup +3/.
