Octane improvement in the 1990's

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6434369
In the past decade the petroleum industry has continually shifted the composition of the gasoline pool to accommodate the lead phasedown and the growing demand for unleaded motor fuels. Barring an unforeseen increase in gasoline demand or unusual regulatory action affecting motor fuel composition, the industry is capable of meeting gasoline octane requirements. However there may be some tight periods as indicated by cases for gasoline-grade projections. The fundamental stability of U.S. gasoline-pool-octane quality could hinge on future EPA rulemaking involving volatility and/or aromatics. Petroleum refiners can handle projected Rvp restrictions from the standpoint of octane quality. It is questionable whether marketed quality can be maintained with limitations on aromatics.
