Conductor for the Swiss LCT coil

Conference · · IEEE Trans. Magn.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6433780

The Swiss LCT-coil will be built up by a forced flow cooled hollow NbTi superconductor. The nominal current is 13,000 amp creating a peak field in the coil of 8.2 T. The conductor consists of a center cooling tube around which 480 NbTi filamentary wires and several copper wires are cabled in three steps and rolled to a 18X18mm cross-section. For reduction of the pulsed field losses the first step cables are surrounded by CuNi foils. By filling the cabled conductor with a special solder mixture, the conductor obtains the necessary mechanical strength. Results of the evaluation program are presented. 8 refs.
