Arizona: a new oil boom

Discovery of the Dineh bi Keyah oil field in northeastern Arizona has led to an optimistic forecast concerning the future of the Arizona oil industry. The discovery well had been plugged and abandoned for more than 1 yr before the operators decided to test the productive interval. A drill-stem test following perforation and acidizing yielded poor results. A stabilized flow rate of 1,400 bpd was obtained after fracturing. Perforations and fracturing of an additional interval increased the production rate to 1,850 bpd of 43.3 gravity oil and 135,000 cfd of gas. Twelve wells have now been completed in this field, at an average production rate of 1,000 bpd. Production tests have also yielded gas with a helium content of 5.18 to 6.23%. The land and leasing practices in this area are controlled by the Navajo Indian Tribe. Their operations are described as being similar to any leasing corporation.
