A method is given for calculating the envelopes of the paraxial paths of a beam with finite emittance and an arbitrary form of the phase contour at the input of the electron-optical system. Expressions have been derived for the envelopes for certain cases in analytical form. An example of a two-dimensional electrostatic quadrupole lens is used in comparing the envelopes of beams not restricted by the paraxial condition with those of paraxial beams.
