The excitation of the Ru(bpy)/sub 3/Cl/sub 2/ complex, deposited on a solid support (glass surface) was observed in a chemiluminescent reaction involving hydroperoxides. It was found that the excitation of the Ru(bpy)/sub 3/Cl/sub 2/ and subsequent light luminescence occurs due to destroying the homogeneity of the starting solution of Ru(bpy)/sub 3/Cl/sub 2/ (in acetonitrile, ethanol, tetramethylene sulfoxide) in which this complex is insoluable (in toluene, ether, or xylene). Photoluminescence spectra data of Ru(bpy)/sub 3/Cl/sub 2/ solutions indicated that an obligatory condition exists for the creation of luminescence. Formation of a precipitate in mandatory and the precipitate was found to be Ru(bpy)/sub 3/Cl/sub 2/. The experimental results suggest that the observed luminescence was caused by reactions involving hydroperoxides, which are usually formed when many organic solvents are let stand in the light in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. The necessary conditions for generating the indicated luminescence is the presence of Ru(bpy)/sub 3/CL/sub 2/ complex, deposited on a glass surface (also on Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ or silica gel), and a solution of hydroperoxides, i.e., this luminescence represents chemiluminescence. Some possible mechanisms for the chemiluminescence of Ru(bpy)/sub 3/Cl/sub 2/ complex are discussed.
