A core barrel latch and by-pass assembly includes a core barrel outer tube secured to the lower end of the hollow drill string. The outer tube has the usual drilling bit as its outer end with a reaming shell just above the bit. An inner core barrel assembly is movable through the drill string into and out of the outer tube. A latch arrangement secures the inner tube assembly in place within the outer tube. The latch has spring fingers held by a ring around a sleeve extending toward the spearhead end of the sleeve. The fingers move outward into locking position and inward into unlocking position upon movement of the spearhead inward and outward, respectively, relative to the sleeve. The core barrel is retrieved, when filled, by means of wire line tools. (39 claims)
